We tend to joke that you might appear a bit surprised for a while after surgery. A brow lift often provides benefits that an upper eyelid lift alone cannot achieve, such as wider, more open eyes and a vibrant appearance. While it can assist in smoothing wrinkles on the forehead, its primary objective is to adjust the position of the brow rather than solely focusing on wrinkle reduction.
What is brow lift?
Because the tissues of the forehead, eyelids, and upper face are continually affected by gravity, they develop laxity over time and allow the eyebrows to droop. The natural and somewhat delicate attachments of the eyebrow to the bone directly beneath it become attenuated with age. The most noticeable outcome of eyebrow ptosis is droopy eyebrows, which can make the face appear angry or fatigued. Furthermore, having too much loose skin around the brow can obstruct one's peripheral vision. A forehead lift, sometimes referred to as a brow lift, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that can be used to revitalise one's appearance and restore the natural firmness of the forehead skin for immediate and long-lasting effects. There are currently nine common types of procedures for raising eyebrows. The most well-known ones, however, involve raising the entire forehead and brows to a higher position while making incisions at the very top of the forehead behind the hairline. It is important to note that the incisions are nicely hidden in the hairline and that typically only slight skin removal is necessary.
What to expect?
For people who are ready to make some cosmetic changes but would rather avoid more radical surgical procedures, brow lift surgery is an incredibly useful, low-risk technique. Following surgery, patients can see significant changes in their looks right away. The frown lines between their eyebrows and forehead creases disappear, and they seem more alert. Additionally, a few months following the treatment, the trade-off scars almost disappear and the eyebrows regain their natural shape. With everything taken into account, getting a brow lift is a simple way to appear younger and feel better about yourself.
Can other surgeries be combined with brow lift?
The overall condition and quality of a patient's skin are crucial factors in determining the success and longevity of a brow lift; a brow lift may not be sufficient if the patient has wrinkles around their eyes and noticeably sagging eyelids. In this instance, a brow lift should be paired with upper eyelid surgery, also referred to as blepharoplasty. Additionally, a brow lift may be combined with a classical facelift for more extensive rejuvenation. However, since a larger region of the soft tissues is exposed during the combined operation, there may be a higher chance of infection and an increased likelihood of wound healing complications.
Who is a suitable candidate for brow lift?
An ideal candidate for a brow lift is often one who is in general excellent health and has as few comorbidities as possible, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, etc., as with any surgical treatments. Since each patient has a unique combination of skin characteristics and facial features, there are no significant age limitations when it comes to considering a brow lift. Even with all of its benefits, brow lift surgery is still a surgical treatment that includes permanent skin excision. For this reason, it is crucial that a candidate assess the need for the surgery objectively and have reasonable expectations regarding the outcome.
Recovery
Following brow lift surgery, recovery is typically quick and easy. Here are some post-operative guidelines and details that a patient should be aware of:
- It typically takes up to two weeks for wounds to heal initially. It is common to have mild to moderate pain during that period, that may need to be treated with prescription medications.
- Since general anaesthesia is typically used throughout the surgery, a post-operative patient is released the following day.
- Up to 48 hours following surgery, the incision sites must be kept dry and clean. Following that, patients are strongly advised to stick to their personal hygiene regimen or modify it in accordance with the advice of their doctor.
- Bruising and swelling are a clinical sign of a local inflammatory reaction following surgery, and they may last for up to 2-4 weeks. It is recommended to see a doctor if it persists, as it can indicate a wound infection.
- The scars from brow lifts are quite subtle, and in the majority of patients, they disappear within a few months following the surgery. Nonetheless, following the surgery, it has been noticed that the hairline in certain patients may move up by around 1 cm.
- After surgery, patients are highly advised not to use nicotine products or drink alcohol since these behaviors may cause unwanted side effects and complications. This is especially true if they are on any form of prescribed medication.
